Know Your DJ

“Genre-fluid dj”

I’m Henry — "DJ Henry Eau" — a genre-fluid DJ and electronic music/beat producer based on the East End of Long Island. I spend my weekends and weeknights crafting nights across the North Fork, Shelter Island, the Hamptons, and the greater NY area. My approach to DJing comes from a mix of classical piano training, jazz-band performance, turntablism, and years of producing electronic music. I think about DJing with a musician’s precision, but I like to improvise like I’m in a jam session.

The way I listen to music really shapes how I play. I’m always paying attention to harmonic movement, groove, texture, emotional tone — all the stuff that’s happening underneath the surface of a track. I’m constantly taking note when old samples show up in new songs, clever covers or remixes are released, or even when rappers borrow rhythmic cadences from each other. Those little connections help me build mixes that travel across eras and genres without losing cohesion

Crowd reading and dance-floor psychology are a huge part of how I DJ. Whether it’s a packed late-night venue or a low-key daytime crowd, I’m always tracking micro-shifts in energy — body language, chatter, tension, release, attention. I’m constantly in conversation with the room. Something I’ve honed over years of nightlife gigs, weddings, and private events is being tuned in to these small shifts in energy, how people are moving, when the crowd wants a push, or when they need a moment to breathe. That sense of dance-floor and crowd psychology helps me warm up a room on the right foot, lean into nostalgia at the perfect time, or take things up a level when the energy is just about to peak. My goal is always to guide the room through an experience, not just play records.

In the end, everything I do blends technical skill, musical insight, and emotional intuition into sets that feel cohesive, responsive, and memorable.

Because the way in which I approach the craft of DJing is rooted in these fundamental principles, I've learned to adapt to many different situations, styles of music, and types of events. My focus in event types are in four main areas: nightlife, “day club”/lounge venues, private events, and weddings.

Each of these event types informs and enhances the others. I bring private event professionalism and music curation skills to bar and club style sets, lounge and “day club” style venues, and karaoke/dj nights. Likewise, I bring real nightlife, crowd-reading intuition and cultural insight to private parties, summer estate soirées, themed special events, and weddings and wedding-adjacent events.

I combine old school crate digging, record collecting, and turntablist DJ approaches to real dance floors, bars, rooms, and events. I love to work in the “spaces in between”. I thrive when I’m able to bridge gaps between cultures, generations, and regions. The constants that never change, however, are reading the room, exercising good judgement, and keeping the mix flowing smoothly.

I live for the transitions.

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON”

Your Questions, Answered

    • I consult with each venue or client, so that I have a comprehensive understanding of the event and can custom tailor my preparation for each party to your individual needs.

    • I live and breathe music and am passionate about the art of and science of music and DJing. I am constantly on the lookout for new music and trends but am just as interested in delving into the backlogs, vinyl bins, and the far corners of the internet looking for gems.

    • I approach DJing as a dialogue between genres, eras, and people. This results in smooth transitions and good pacing in mixed demographic rooms.

    • Last but not least, I believe in playing for the room. This means the cohesiveness of your event or venue is my number one priority when I’m DJing.

  • Great question and nothing to ashamed of.

As a working DJ in real public venues, I deal with uncertainty all the time. No two nights in a bar, lounge, or club setting are alike. You can prepare all you want for events like these, but you often have no idea what you’re walking into night to night even at venues you play every week!

My experience DJing a wide variety of venues and events help me not only expand my music library so that I am prepared for all kinds of situations, but also hone my attention, judgement, and real time decision making.

It’s always best to go into events with a plan and some reasonable expectations of what might happen in a night. I can help you craft your vision AND also prepare for variability at your event.

  • It’s important that your DJ and client are on the same page and have a shared understanding of the needs of your event(s).

    Considering contacting if you:

    • Want a DJ who collaborates with you on crafting custom sets that align with your vision

    • Believe your DJ should be playing songs based off the energy of the room and not a scripted list

    • Care about how songs flow one to the next in a smooth and musical way

    • Value a DJ who understands how genres and eras connect

  • I bring all equipment necessary to events. This can include:

    • DJ Mixer/Controller + Backup

    • Laptop/Music LIbrary

    • Backup Laptop/Backup Music Library Drive

    • PA Speakers

    • Subwoofer(s)

    • Cabling/cords

    • Wireless and Wired Microphone(s)

    • Table, Stands, “DJ Furniture”

    • Lighting: Wash Lights, Disco Ball, Spotlight

  • As every event has a different scope based on vision, guest count, equipment needed, logistics, and set length, it is difficult to provide one size fits all pricing.

Feel free to contact me about your needs, vision, and party details. I will be happy to discuss things with you and provide an accurate price estimate.

  • I love music and love speaking to clients about music, events, DJing, and anything in between.

If anything you’ve seen or read here on the site here resonates with you, feel free to reach out. I’d love to have a conversation about your party and vision. A few details about your event date, location, and general vibe you’re going for are enough for me to get started with some musical ideas and an accurate price quote.

At the end of the day, I want to make sure you find what you need, and have no problems chatting about things before you make a big decision.
